George Skaff, Regional Commercial Head, Connect Ads was recently in Pakistan to attend the PAS Dig-it 2016 Conference. We caught up with him to discuss Connect Ads, the intricacies of online ad space, and the future of digital advertising.
AMBER ARSHAD: What was the thrust of your session in the Dig-it 2016 conference?
GEORGE SKAFF: For background, we recently opened an office in Karachi and coming to this conference was a great way to interact with our partners, agencies and clients. The session I took part in focused on the impact of technology on marketing and how to unite advertising and multichannel marketing. For Connect Ads, technology is the core of our business and partnering with the right people is integral – for that, awareness and education is key. The conference was one way to meet the right people under one platform.
AA: What are the core services Connect Ads offers?
GS: Connect Ads, headquartered in Egypt with offices in the MENA region, is part of the A15 Group, an entrepreneurial company that creates digital products and technology brands. We essentially sell advertising space for different clients, but solely on digital platforms. To do this, we partner with credible and reputed digital publishers. In the Gulf region, our partners include Twitter, LinkedIn, TubeMogul and Yahoo Gemini. Our partnerships are exclusive, meaning that if a client wants to advertise on Twitter (or any of our other partners), they have to come through Connect Ads, buy premium ad space, and manage the rollout. The rollout involves targeting the right audience based on the nature of the product, deciding the time, duration and so on, and then retargeting (the ads) when necessary. We are known in the region as the gateway to the global partners, because we are the first to connect with them. Our partnership with Microsoft has been going strong for the last 12 years. We were the first to represent Facebook, Twitter, etc. Having said this, we have also partnered with reputed local publishers, such as Akbar24, Al-Sharq Portal and ArQaam.
AA: Why did you decide to launch in Pakistan, and do you have a dedicated team in Pakistan?
GS: We had identified Pakistan as a key region to invest in almost three years ago and we already have an office of a sister company, Mobizone Pakistan (a part of the A15 Group) in Islamabad. We knew there was an appetite for the products we represent in Pakistan – digital is rapidly growing here, and agencies and clients on the digital sphere are aware and in synch with global developments. For now, we have an office only in Karachi, and a small dedicated team, but we plan to expand to other cities. At the moment, our clients in Pakistan include Unilever, P&G, Samsung, Telenor, Mobilink, Coke and HBL – we don’t represent any local Pakistani publishers but we are always on the lookout.
AA: What are the traits that you look for when taking on-board a partner, and do you plan to partner with any Pakistani publishers?
GS: The first thing we do is study the prospective partner, which means that we look at their growth pattern, footprint, the inventory they have and if we see it as a feasible and healthy partnership, we take things forward and sign an exclusivity contract – exclusive meaning that we will be the only one representing that partner. We are open to partnering with Pakistani publishers, if they fulfil the criteria.
AA: Do you find any similarities between the Pakistani market and the MENA region in terms of digital execution and planning?
GS: Pakistan is in the very early stages of the digital front. The figures I have for the Pakistani ad industry are not very favourable for digital; out of 600 million dollars ad spend, not more than five percent accounted for digital spend – which is very low compared to the global scenario. In the Gulf, around 20 to 25% of ad budgets are spent on digital – and this contributes to around 800 million dollars. There, clients and agencies are very active and open to spending more on digital. Nevertheless, Pakistani brands are slowly catching on. What is needed is to cultivate that mindset to invest more in digital – and for that education and awareness is needed, and from there on, things will move forward and progress.

Messi absent as his tax fraud trial opens in Spain

BARCELONA: The trial of Argentina star Lionel Messi in tax fraud charges opened Tuesday in Spain in his absence just days before Argentina's first match in the Copa America tournament against Chile.
Messi, 28, and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, are accused of using a chain of fake companies in Belize and Uruguay to avoid paying taxes on 4.16 million euros ($4.7 million) of Messi's income earned through the sale of his image rights from 2007-09.
They have been charged with three counts of tax fraud.
Dozens of journalists, from Spain and abroad were on hand at a Barcelona court for the start of the trial which is expected to last until Thursday when Messi and his father will take the stand.
Messi had planned to be in Barcelona for the start of the trial but a lower back injury he suffered during a friendly against Honduras last week prevented him from doing so, defence lawyer Javier Sanchez-Vera said at the start of the proceedings.
Spanish prosecutors are seeking a jail sentence of 22-and-a-half months for Messi and his father if they are found guilty, plus fines equivalent to the amount that was allegedly defrauded.
But any such sentence would likely be suspended as it is common in Spain for first offences carrying a sentence of less than two years.
The first day of the trial will be dedicated to preliminary legal questions and witness testimony.

'Dad handled the cash'

The Barcelona striker and his defence team have argued that the player's father handled his finances without reporting to him, and that the striker was not aware of any wrongdoing.
“My dad handled the cash,” Messi said in September 2013 when he was questioned by a judge investigating the case at a court in Gavia, a town on the outskirts of Barcelona where the footballer lives.
He reportedly told the judge at that hearing that he never looks at the contracts he signs.
“I signed things, but I never look at the contracts. I don't know what I sign,” Messi said according to the El Periodico daily, which got access to his September 2013 statement to the judge.
According to the alleged statement published by the Barcelona daily, the judge showed him several sponsorship contracts that he signed, but he did not remember them.
“This is something that my dad manages. And I trust him. I devote myself to playing football,” he reportedly said.
“I do what he tells me to do.”
After winning a league and Cup double with Barcelona, the five-time World Player of the Year is due to join his Argentina teammates for the Copa America in the United States.
Argentina take on defending champions Chile in their first game of the tournament at Santa Clara's Levi's Stadium, the home of the San Francisco 49ers, in California on June 6.

Chinese citizen targeted in Karachi blast

KARACHI: At least one person sustained minor injuries in a remote-controlled explosion targeting a Chinese engineer in Karachi's Gulshan-i-Hadeed area on Monday, police said.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rao Anwar said a pamphlet written in Sindhi and bearing the name of a group called 'Sindhudesh Revolutionary Party' was recovered from the site of the blast. The pamphlet denounced "foreign control over Sindh's natural resources".
The pamphlet read [Translation]: "We consider China, rising as a global power, to be an ally of Pakistan, and also consider it an accomplice of the Punjabi Establishment in making Sindh slave to loot its resources, and therefore we accept the responsibility of bomb attack on Chinese in Gulshan-i-Hadeed."
"We want to make it clear to China that we will oppose every anti-Sindh project including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)," it further said.

Police cordoned off the area and collected evidence from the scene for investigation. Five hundred grams of explosives were used in the improvised explosive device (IED), which included nuts and bolts.
Witnesses from a truck nearby reported seeing a suspicious item in the green belt of the road, which exploded as the black vehicle carrying the Chinese engineer passed by.
According to DIG East Zone Dr Kamran Fazal, the roadside bomb was planted opposite Quaid-i-Azam Park along National Highway.
Gulshan-i-Hadeed is a neighbourhood in Karachi's Bin Qasim Town. The town is situated near Pakistan Steel Mills and houses its workers.
Hundreds of Chinese workers are currently working all over Pakistan on various development projects, including the CPEC and the Thar coal power project.
In Aug 2015, the Sindh police claimed to have chalked out a comprehensive security plan for Chinese nationals and professionals visiting Karachi and other parts of the province for CPEC-related projects. Nearly six months ago, for 111 Chinese projects, the Sindh police were ensuring security to more than 1,500 nationals of the neighbouring country.
