Free seeds, poultry handed over to Bara families

LANDI KOTAL: The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations in collaboration with political administration have completed distribution of maize seed, poultry and livestock among more than 17,000 recently rehabilitated families of Bara sub-division in Khyber Agency.

The FAO, under its rehabilitation plan of returned families, had conducted a need assessment survey in Malakdinkhel, Akkakhel, Qambarkhel, Shalobar and Sipah areas to collect data of needy and deserving families under their slogan of ‘Apna Ogao, Apna Khao’(grow yourself and eat yourself).

FAO coordinator for Bara Gul Mohammad told Dawn at Qambarabad distribution point that the survey was conducted in a transparent manner with the help of local communities to identify deserving and poor farmers. He said that initially 15,000 farmers were provided with 25 kilograms of Azam brand maize seeds and 20 kilograms of Sorgham brand seed for the current cultivation season in Bara.

“The basic aim of this project is to facilitate the returning families to restart cultivating their barren lands and to enable them to stand on their own feet,” said Gul Mohammad.

He said that FAO also distributed seeds of six different vegetables among another 7,500 families. The FAO also selected at least 2,000 poor widows, who were provided with poultry and livestock during the three-week seed distribution process.

SCHOOL: Pakistan Baitul Maal on Monday inaugurated a primary school in Jamrud tehsil of Khyber Agency to provide free education to poor students of the area.

The school at Nayee Abadi in Jamrud was inaugurated by managing director of Baitul Maal Sheikh Abid Waheed, MNA Shahjee Gul Afridi and Senator Taj Mohammad in the presence of local officials and tribal elders.

Speaking of the occasion, Mr Waheed said that as many as 120 poor children would be provided free education at the school along with provision of Rs300 as monthly stipend and free uniform.

He said that the school was established on the directives of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to help the needy students of tribal areas. He said that similar schools would be established in other parts of Fata. The poor tribal students would be admitted to Islamabad Sweet Home for better education and look after, he added.

Mr Waheed also distributed cheques of Rs500,000 among 50 poor students and their parents.

Also in the day, at least 120 physically challenged persons of Khyber Agency were enrolled during a registration ceremony organised by a private organisation at the Jirga Hall in Jamrud.

Niaz Afridi, the chief executive of Niaz Disabled Organisation Khyber, said on the occasion that out of the total 3,700 disabled persons in Khyber Agency, 1,900 were registered with the organisation.

کابل: افغان شہر قندوز میں نامعلوم مسلح افراد نے مختلف بسوں سے سفر کرنے والے 16 افراد کو قتل جب کہ درجنوں کو یرغمال بنالیا ہے۔ 

غیر ملکی خبر ایجنسی کے مطابق افغان حکام نے دعویٰ کیا ہے کہ طالبان نے قندوز کے قریب ضلع علی آباد میں اپنی خود ساختہ چیک پوسٹ پر کابل سے بدخشاں جانے والی 4 مسافر بسوں کو  روک کر اس میں سوار 230 سے زائد افراد کو یرغمال بنالیا۔ مسلح افراد نے مسافروں کے شناختی دستاویزات کی جانچ پڑتال کے بعد  46 افراد کو یرغمال بنا کر باقی تمام کو رہا کرکے انہیں آگے سفر کی اجازت دے دی۔ واقعے کے کچھ ہی دیر بعد یرغمال بنائے گئے افراد میں  سے 16 کو قتل کردیا جب کہ دیگر تاحال ان کی تحویل میں ہیں۔

قندوز پولیس کے نائب سربراہ معصوم ہاشمی کا کہنا ہے کہ قندوز کے پولیس کمانڈر شیر عزیز کماول نے واقعے کی تصدیق کرتے ہوئے کہا ہے کہ مغویوں کی شناخت تاحال نہیں ہوسکی تاہم اغوا کئے گئے مسافروں میں سے 9 سے افغان فورسز کی وردی پہن رکھی تھی جب کہ دیگر پولیس کے سابق اہلکار ہوسکتے ہیں۔ دوسری جانب طالبان کی جانب سے اب تک واقعے کی ذمہ داری قبول نہیں کی گئی۔

واضح رہے کہ طالبان کی جانب سے اس وقت افغانستان میں سرکاری فورسز اور امریکی افواج کے خلاف کارروائی کی جارہی ہے۔

’جمہوری نظام آج بحرانوں سے نمٹنے کی صلاحیت رکھتا ہے‘

نئے پارلیمانی سال کے آغاز پر بدھ کو پارلیمنٹ کے مشترکہ اجلاس سے خطاب کرتے ہوئے ان کا کہنا تھا کہ پائیدار ترقی اور استحکام جمہوریت کے بغیر ممکن نہیں اور پاکستان میں نرم و گرم حالات میں جمہوریت کا سفر کامیابی سے جاری ہے۔

پارلیمان کا مشترکہ اجلاس اسلام آباد میں دن گیارہ بجے شروع ہوا اور اس موقع پر چاروں صوبوں کے گورنر، مسلح افواج کے سربراہان، غیر ملکی سفراء اور دیگر اعلیٰ شخصیات بھی پارلیمنٹ ہاؤس میں موجود تھیں۔

اجلاس سے خطاب میں صدر ممنون حسین نے کہا کہ حکومت اور حزب اختلاف دونوں جمہوری استحکام پر یقین رکھتے ہیں اور حکومت کو چاہے کہ ایسی پالیسیاں ترتیب دی جائیں جن سے ملک مستحکم ہو اور ضد اور ذاتی اختلافات کو قومی مفادات کی راہ میں رکاوٹ نہ بننے دیا جائے۔

’سیاسی بلوغت کی جانب یہ بڑی سیاسی پیش رفت ہے۔جس کے لیے پارلیمان سیاسی جماعتیں اور قوم خراج تحسین کی مستحق ہے۔‘

تاہم انھوں نے اس کے ساتھ حزب مخالف کو تنقید کا نشانہ بناتے ہوئے کہا کہ حزب اختلاف غیر قانونی طریقے سے اپنی مرضی منتخب نمائندوں پر مسلط نہ کرے اور قوم کے غریب غوام کی فلاح و بہبود کے لیے کام کرنا حزب اختلاف کی بھی ذمہ داری ہے۔

چین پاک اقتصادی راہدادری کے حوالے سے ان کا کہنا تھا کہ چین پاک اقتصادی راہداری پر اگر کسی کو خدشات ہیں تو انھیں بات چیت کے ذریعے حل کیا جائے تاکہ غیروں کو موقع نہ ملے۔

ان کا کہنا تھا کہ مشترکہ سرحدوں کے محفوظ ہونے سے ہی تجارت میں اضافہ ہو سکتا ہے۔

انھوں نے کہا کہ بلوچستان، کراچی اور وزیر ستان میں امن کے لیے کی جانے والی کوششوں کے مثبت نتائج سامنے آ رہے ہیں جبکہ ان علاقوں میں موجود نوجوانوں کو ماضی کا تلخ یادوں سے دور کرنا ہمارا کام ہے۔

ہمسایہ ممالک کے ساتھ تعلقات کے بارے میں صدر ممنون نے کہا کہ پاکستان ہمسایہ ممالک میں امن کا خواہاں ہے اور لیکن افسوس کی بات ہے کہ اس سلسلے میں پاکستان نے بھارت نے جس گرم جوشی کے جذبے سے ہاتھ بڑھایا اس طرح کا جواب نہیں ملا۔

’پاکستان نے کئی بار انڈیا کو مذاکرات کی پیش کش کی لیکن دونوں ممالک کے درمیان مذاکرات تعطل کا شکار ہیں جو کہ باعث تشویش ہے۔‘

پارلیمان کے اس مشترکہ اجلاس میں صدر کے خطاب کے دوران نعرہ بازی بھی کی گئی۔

خیال رہے کہ پاکستان کے آئین کی شق 56 کے تحت ہر نئے پارلیمانی سال کے آغاز پر صدر کا پارلیمنٹ کے مشترکہ اجلاس سے خطاب کرنا لازمی ہے۔

صدر ممنون کے خطاب کے ساتھ یہ پہلا موقع ہے کہ مسلم لیگ نون کی کوئی وفاقی حکومت اقتدار کے تین برس مکمل کر کے چوتھے برس میں داخل ہو گئی ہے۔

تاہم اس موقع پر جماعت کے سربراہ اور ملک کے موجودہ وزیراعظم نواز شریف ایوان میں موجود نہیں ہوں گے کیونکہ وہ دل کی بیماری کے علاج کے لیے لندن کے ایک ہسپتال میں زیر علاج ہیں۔

پاکستان مسلم لیگ ن اس سے پہلے سنہ 1990 اور سنہ 1997 میں وفاق میں حکومت بنا چکی ہے تاہم پہلی مرتبہ اس کی مدت ڈھائی برس اور دوسری مرتبہ پونے تین برس ہی رہی تھی۔

‘Spot-fixing saga is behind Amir’: Azhar backs pacer ahead of England return

LAHORE: Pakistan's one-day captain Azhar Ali threw his support behind Mohammad Amir on Tuesday for the team's forthcoming tour of England, saying the spot-fixing episode is behind the pacer.

Amir, 24, is seen as Pakistan's main weapon for the team's tour of England, where they will play four Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 between July and September.

Amir has returned strongly since his five-year ban for spot-fixing was lifted in September last year, taking five wickets in the two one-day internationals against New Zealand in January and as many wickets in 11 Twenty20 games.

Ali said the sordid episode is firmly behind his bowler.

“The 2010 case is past (for Amir) and now we need to look forward,” said Ali, when asked if the case still haunts Amir.

Amir, along with then Test captain Salman Butt and pace partner Mohammad Asif, was charged for taking illegal money in return for deliberate no-balls during the Lord's Test in August 2010.

The three were briefly jailed in the UK before returning to Pakistan to serve out the rest of their ban.

“It's been a while now since the case, Amir has gelled with us well. It could have been tough had he come straight for such a tour but now after playing with us for long, things have settled for him,” said the captain.

Ali said the toughest phase of Amir's comeback has since passed but noted that his return to England could spur additional stress.

“I know England was the place where the incident (in 2010) happened but hopefully he can handle the pressure the same way he did on his comeback (in January).”

However, the captain said the team is prepared to back Amir and would deal with any issues if they arise.

“But still if anything happens we as a team will handle it. We have full faith in him to deliver,” said Ali of the left-arm bowler who took 17 wickets in the 2010 series and was the man of the series for Pakistan.

Pakistan will play two warm-up games in the first week of July before the first Test starts at Lord's from July 14.

سفری دستاویزات کے بغیر طورخم سے سرحد پار کرنے پر پابندی

پاکستان میں حکام نے افغان سرحد پر طورخم کے مقام پر سفری دستاویزات کی جانچ پڑتال کے عمل پر سختی سے عمل درآمد شروع کر دیا ہے جس کی وجہ سے سرحد پار آنے جانے والوں کی ایک بڑی تعداد متاثر ہو رہی ہے۔

پاکستان کے حکام نے پیر کو طورخم سرحد پر اعلانات کر کے مطلع کر دیا تھا کہ منگل سے دونوں سے صرف وہ افراد سرحد عبور کر سکیں گے جن کے پاس مکمل دستاویزات ہوں گی۔

پاکستان آنے والے زیادہ تر افغان علاج کے لیے پشاور آتے ہیں اور انھیں ڈاکٹر کی ہدایات پر یا راہداری کارڈ ہونے پر سرحد عبور کرنے کی اجازت دی جاتی ہے تاہم اب ان کے لیے پاسپورٹ اور ویزہ لازمی قرار دے دیا گیا ہے۔

Sept 11 suspect asks that US judge step down, cites evidence destruction

WASHINGTON: The United States (US) military judge overseeing the trial of the accused mastermind of the Sept 11 attacks should step down and the case should be scrapped because he effectively conspired with prosecutors to destroy evidence, defence lawyers said in a court filing.

The motion said Judge James Pohl, an Army colonel, and prosecutors had tainted the case against Pakistan-born Khalid Shaikh Mohammad by keeping defence lawyers from learning that the evidence had been destroyed.

The motion was filed on May 10 and recently cleared for release. It raises a potential hurdle in the slow-moving capital case against Mohammad and four others charged in the hijacked airliner attacks of Sept 11, 2001, in which 3,000 people died.

Pohl, along with prosecutors, "manipulated secret proceedings and the use of secret orders to mislead the defence and unfairly deprive Mr Mohammad" of ways to keep the evidence from being destroyed, the motion said.

Commissions spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Valerie Henderson referred questions to the prosecutor's response, which is expected to be made public in a few days.

Pohl presided over a pretrial hearing on Tuesday in the case at the US Navy prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The filing alleges that Pohl authorised prosecutors to destroy evidence six months after he agreed to a defence request that it be preserved.

Defence lawyers were kept in the dark about the authorization and the contact between Pohl and prosecutors, it said.

Pohl's order had included a provision that prosecutors give a redacted version of it to the defence. But he did not tell them to do so until 18 months after the order was issued, long after the evidence was destroyed, the filing said.

The motion does not detail what the evidence was, and classified annexes are sealed. A prosecution response filed last week has not been cleared for release.

The motion asks that Pohl recuse himself and that Army Brigadier General Mark Martins, the military commissions' chief prosecutor, and the prosecution team be disqualified. It also asks that Mohammad's trial be scrapped and/or the death penalty be dropped.

Martins had no immediate comment.

During Tuesday's hearing, prosecutors asked Pohl to let 10 relatives of Sept 11 victims testify in open court. Reuters monitored the proceedings from a media center at Fort Meade, Maryland, outside Washington.

The case is among a half dozen against Guantanamo inmates.
