Gen Raheel asks US to bomb TTP hideouts inside Afghanistan

RAWALPINDI: Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, in a meeting with senior US officials at GHQ on Friday, raised the demand of targeting Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants and their chief Mullah Fazlullah in their hideouts in Afghanistan.
Talking to Commander Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan General John Nicholson and US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Olson, Gen Raheel said "Pakistan will not allow Indian and Afghan intelligence agencies to foment terrorism in the country".
According to an ISPR communique, the regional security situation with particular reference to border management and peace and stability in Afghanistan in the post-May 21 US drone strike environment came under discussion during the meeting.
The army chief reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment towards the war against terrorism and effective border management with Afghanistan in order to promote regional peace and stability.
Expressing his serious concern on the May 21 US drone strike in Balochistan ─ which had killed Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Mansour ─ and terming it a violation of Pakistan's sovereignty, Gen Raheel highlighted how the drone strike negatively affected the mutual trust and respect between the two countries and the gains made during Pakistan's own war on terror.
He told the visiting dignitaries that it is unfortunate that Pakistan is blamed for instability in Afghanistan, adding that Pakistan has always expressed its readiness to work for a long term peace process for Afghanistan under the Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG) framework.

No plan to introduce tax amnesty scheme, Senate body told

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Finance was informed on Friday that the government had no plan to introduce any tax amnesty scheme for whitening black money as it was against ‘moral grounds and ethics’.
“The government holds no plan to introduce any fresh tax amnesty scheme for tax evaders or those who hold black money,” federal Finance Secretary Dr Waqar Masood informed the committee.
He was responding to the budget proposal by Senator Talha Mehmood who suggested that fresh tax amnesty scheme to regularise black economy should be introduced at the rate of two per cent tax.
Chairman of the committee Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, however, expressed concern over the tax amnesty scheme on the grounds that it was generally considered discrimination against regular taxpayers.
As Senator Mehmood pushed on with his suggestion trying to persuade the FBR team at the meeting to introduce a new tax amnesty scheme, Mr Mandviwalla said that the rate of tax could be enhanced from two per cent but it would allow new investors to legalise their money.
Senator Saud Majeed extended his support to the idea, asking about international obligations over such amnesty schemes.
FBR Chairman Nisar Mohammad Khan told the committee that all such schemes since 1958 had failed to yield the desired results.
“There are two views over the subject. One is that this is discrimination against honest taxpayers and the second is that untaxed income should be brought into the tax net even it requires giving some relief,” he added.
However, Finance Secretary Dr Waqar Masood stated that the government did not have any plan to introduce any fresh tax amnesty scheme to whiten black money.
“The recent one brought for traders has been extended up to June 30, 2016, but the results are all in front of you,” he said, adding that “the government has decided that the concept of filer and non-filer would continue where non-filers would have to bear the cost for remaining outside the tax net”.
The committee discussed several clauses of the Finance Bill 2016-17, and it was agreed to recommend a reduction in GST on bottled packaged water at retail price from 17 to 12 per cent and abolition of all import duties on PCs, laptops and other items.
The Senate committee supported the idea of imposing additional two per cent tax on supply chains of sugar industry after replacing it with 8 per cent FED and bringing under reduced GST rate of 8 per cent.
It was recommended to abolish duties on import of dumper trucks for Thar coal project for five years.
Meanwhile, the National Highway Authority chairman told the committee that Loari Tunnel would become operational by March 2018.

JUI-F Senator 'verbally abuses' female analyst during TV talk show

KARACHI: A Jamiat-i-Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) senator reportedly used abusive language against female analyst and rights activist Marvi Sirmed during a television show on Friday, triggering a social media uproar.
The show aired on private television channel NewsOne was debating recent honour killings in Pakistan when JUI-F Senator Hafiz Hamdullah got angry over Ms Sirmed for what he believed was her support for the comments of Barrister Masroor, a panelist in the programme, over a lack of reaction from the Council Of Islamic Ideology on these killings.

Hamdullah was of the view that Barrister Masroor should not have used the words 'pee k soey hue hain' (sleeping after getting intoxicated) for the CII chairman and his fellow JUI-F member Maulana Sherani.
"I won't allow you to speak if you are supporting his words," Hamdullah said to Sirmed.
The argument between Hamdullah and Sirmed resulted in an exchange of hot words between the rights activist and the lawmaker.
As seen in the video, Hamdullah continued that he would not allow Sirmed to speak.
The questionable language was omitted from the transmission. However, Sirmed in her Facebook post claimed that Hamdullah began verbally abusing her with the worst possible expletives and tried to physically attack her as well.
Talking to DawnNews, Sirmed said Hamdullah also tried to physically attack her, forcing panelist Fayaz ul Hassan Chauhan to get in the way to stop him and have the channel's management call its security staff.
She further claimed that the whole episode is recorded in the channel's cameras.
PTI's Fayaz ul Hassan Chauhan and Barrister Masroor supported Sirmed's claim on social media.
On Twitter, politicians, lawmakers and media representatives condemned the attack on Sirmed, some also calling for revoking Maulana Hamdullah's Senate membership.
The JUI-F senator has in the past used abusive language against a female anchor during a television talk show.
He verbally abused the show host for what he called her misrepresentation of clergy's views on violence against women.
