Contentious Peru goal knocks Brazil out of Copa America

stitute Raul Riudiaz's hotly disputed goal earned Peru a shock 1-0 win over Brazil in Foxborough, Massachusetts on Sunday, the defeat knocking the five-times world champions out the Copa America at the group stage.
The Peruvian forward appeared to use his hand to score from close range with 16 minutes remaining and after a long delay while the referee consulted with his assistant while taking advice through an earpiece, he allowed the goal to stand.
Television pictures showed Ruidiaz grinning after the goal had been awarded but the Brazilian players were apoplectic with rage at a decision that sent them tumbling out of the tournament before the knockout stages for the first time since 1987.
“We saw that the ball hit his hand but you can't complain,” Brazil centre half Miranda told reporters.
“(The referee) said he discussed it with four officials and that they didn't see the handball.
“Brazil tried from the first minute to score but the ball didn't want to go in unfortunately, and that's football. If you don't score you pay for it.”
The result lifted Peru to the top of Group B and eliminated Brazil, who dropped down to third place behind Ecuador in the tournament being played in the United States to celebrate the centenary of governing body CONMEBOL and the Copa America.
Following the conclusion of the first two groups in the 16-team competition, Peru will play Colombia in the quarter-finals in New Jersey on Friday, while the host nation will take on Ecuador in Seattle a day earlier.
Mexico, Venezuela and Argentina have already qualified from the other two groups with a match to play with either Chile or Panama joining them in the quarter-finals pending the result of their showdown on Tuesday.

Missed Opportunity

The loss was a harsh one for Brazil, who knew a draw would have been enough to see them advance and were generally the better team without ever really threatening the Peruvian goal.
Peru upped the tempo after a lacklustre first half and the controversial decider came after 74 minutes when Andy Polo whipped in a low cross that fell just behind the onrushing Ruidiaz inside the six-yard box.
The Universitario player appeared to handle the ball into the net to the immediate anger of the Brazilian players, who surrounded the Uruguayan referee along with several Peruvians before the official opted to give the goal after a long delay.
Elias then missed a golden opportunity to equalise for Brazil in injury time but he failed to connect properly with only the goalkeeper to beat.
The result came just hours after Ecuador hammered a hapless Haiti 4-0 to guarantee their quarter-final berth.
Enner Valencia opened the scoring after 10 minutes and Jaime Ayovi doubled Ecuador's advantage nine minutes later after a swift counter-attack.
Christian Noboa made it 3-0 with a well-placed shot after 56 minutes before Antonio Valencia tapped home the fourth after another break on 77 minutes.
The result left Haiti, who were competing in the competition for the first time, bottom of the group on no points and a goal difference of minus 11.

US Muslim leader condemns Orlando attack, slams extremists

WASHINGTON: The head of a prominent US Muslim advocacy group Sunday strongly condemned the nightclub massacre in Florida, calling members of the militant Islamic State (IS) group an "aberration" amid allegations the gunman was inspired by them.
Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, also called for unity and urged politicians not to "exploit" the slaughter in Orlando, which left 50 dead and dozens more injured.
"This is a hate crime. Plain and simple. We condemn it in the strongest possible terms," Awad told a news conference.
"It violates our principles as Americans and as Muslims. Let me be clear, we have no tolerance for extremism of any kind.”
The FBI said the American gunman, 29-year-old Omar Mateen, who died in an exchange of fire with police, was believed to have made a 911 call pledging allegiance to IS before the shooting.
Awad referenced such reporting and said he had a word for IS members and supporters.
"You do not speak for us. You do not represent us. You are an aberration, you are an outlaw ... they don't speak for our faith. They never belonged to this beautiful faith."
With the 2016 race for the White House in full swing, Awad warned that perpetrators of attacks such as the one in Orlando "mean only to divide us" and called for calm on the political front.
"And to those politicians who may try to exploit this tragedy, we ask them to respect the victims and their families. This is not the time to score points. This is not the time to exploit fear. This is the time for unity and faith."
White House hopeful Donald Trump lost no time inclaiming the killing showed he has been right about Islamic extremism all long.

Attack on club 'unbelievable': local Imam

The imam of the mosque where the Orlando nightclub shooter worshipped said Sunday that the suspect never gave any indication he was capable of such violence.
Omar Mateen, 29, attended evening prayers three or four times a week at the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce, bringing his son who is about four or five years old, the mosque's imam said.
"He would pray and his son would play," said Syed Shafeeq Rahman, who has known Mateen since 2003 when he became the imam.
Mateen did not socialise, leaving when services ended. He didn't talk but would smile and shake hands, Rahman said.
The imam said it was "unbelievable" that a heavily-armed Mateen carried out a rampage at a gay club in Orlando, killing 50 people and wounding 53.
It was the deadliest terror attack in the United States since September 11, 2001.

"I never expected this," Rahman said, holding a copy of the Holy Quran in his hand as he spoke with reporters. "We teach peace and justice."
"It must be some kind of psychological problem or anger problem," the imam said, adding that Mateen might have been radicalised on the Internet.

Germany kick off Euro title pursuit with comfortable win over Ukraine

Bastian Schweinsteiger had time for three touches of the ball and scored with one as world champions Germany started their European Championship campaign with a 2-0 win over Ukraine.
The 31-year-old Manchester United midfielder came on in the 90th minute and quickly put away a perfect pass from Mesut Ozil for the deciding goal.
With fan violence again tainting the tournament, Germany's win followed 1-0 victories for Poland over Northern Ireland and Croatia over Turkey.
Schweinsteiger is coming back from a threemonth knee ligament layoff and the the joy of his first international goal in five years apparently took a toll.
“I ran so hard in the celebrations that I'm a bit out of breath still.
“It was amazing for that to happen, it's the kind of thing you can only wish for, but the most important thing is the team wins,” he said of his quickfire goal in the Group C match.
Defender Shkodran Mustafi headed the opener in the first half but goalkeeper Manuel Neus had to make several key saves and Jerome Boateng made a spectacular goalline clearance to block a sure equaliser.
Germany coach Joachim Loew hailed Boateng, who was the target of right-wing German politician Alexander Gauland this month. Gauland said Germans would not want Boateng as their neighbour and that the national team was no longer “German in the classical sense.”
“It is good to have Jerome Boateng as your neighbour in the defence,” countered Loew.
“He sees dangerous situations, he reacted and very clearly the ball was not behind the line.”
The evening was only blemished by fighting between German and Ukraine supporters in Lille before the game.
German police said they arrested 21 known hooligans who tried to get across the border.
Another 50 leading suspects took part in the skirmishes which followed the major battles between Russia and England fans in Marseille.

Fan gatecrasher

A fan gatecrashed Luka Modric's celebrations after he scored Croatia's Group D winner over Turkey with a brilliant volley.
The Real Madrid playmaker performed an equally spectacular knee dive into the corner of the Parc des Princes, where he was joined by team-mates but also a fan in a Croatia replica shirt and red and white painted head.
Stewards led the man away after the security breach.
“It could have been also a supporter from Turkey, but thank God it was our supporter! After scoring this kind of goal, I didn't even notice,” Modric said.
Croatia coach Ante Cacic said the goal had been “magical”.
It was Modric's 11th goal for his country and they have never lost when he has scored.
“Luka really deserves to be talked about, especially after this match,” said Cacic.
“It was one of his best matches in Croatia's history. He was really playing well. He was really our leader.”
Poland striker Arkadiusz Milik rifled home the only goal in his country's Group C win over Northern Ireland in Nice — his country's first ever at a European Championship final.
Poland had three draws and three losses over two appearances in 2008 and 2012.
Coach Adam Nawalka is now looking forward to playing Germany at the Stade de France on June 16 with a spot in the last 16 likely to be at stake.
“We have been preparing for them for a long time, we prepare to win against Gemany,” said Nawalka.
Poland's man-of-the match, Gregorz Krychowiak, added to the air of confidence.
“The next games will show that we can be even better and go further,” he said.
“The players here play at European level for their clubs and are competing for the highest targets. They have the experience to take it forward at the Euros.”
For Michael O'Neill's Northern Ireland, it was a disappointing end to their first ever European Championship match.
It was also 30-years to the day since their last game in a major tournament — a 3-0 defeat by Brazil at the 1986 World Cup.
Northern Ireland kept the lid on Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski, but still needed some spectacular saves by Michael McGovern in goal to stay in the game.
“It was a difficult match. Poland were excellent,” said O'Neill.
“At times early on we were almost overpowered by their physical strength. We tried to get something out of it, but didn't manage to create anything of significance. In all honesty, the best team won on the day.”
Northern Ireland now play Ukraine in Lyon on Thursday with both sides needing a win to stay in the hunt for the knockout stages.
