England set Pakistan daunting 565-run target

MANCHESTER: England on Monday set Pakistan a daunting target of 565 runs after home skipper Alastair Cook declared the second innings at 173 for 1 on day four of the second Test at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Cook was 76 not out, and vice-captain Joe Root 71 not out.

It was the second time this match that England had gorged themselves on Pakistan's attack, with opener Cook making 105 and Root a Test-best 254 in England's first-innings 589 for eight declared.

The second innings saw England's two most experienced batsmen put on 105 in 85 balls for the second wicket, with the duo adding 75 runs in just nine overs on Monday before Cook declared.

Pakistan will now need to rewrite the record books if they are to achieve a remarkable win — the most any side have made in the fourth innings to win a Test is the West Indies' 418 for seven against Australia at St John's in May 2003.

There are a minimum of 185 overs left in this match.

Cook came under severe criticism on Sunday for not enforcing the follow-on on Pakistan team despite 391-run lead.

England's assistant coach, Paul Farbrace, defended Cook's decision by terming it as a move to make the most of the placid wicket.

In reply of hosts' mammoth 589, Pakistan's batting line-up crumbled at 198.

565 is the second biggest target Pakistan have been set after the West Indies sent them to chase 573 at Bridgetown in 2005.

Pakistan lead the four-match series 1-0 after their 75-run win in the first Test at Lord's.

PPP decides to remove Sindh chief minister

KARACHI: In a surprising move, the top leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party decided on Sunday to replace the octogenarian Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, with a relatively young man to what many believe face tough challenges ahead.

Mr Shah — a third-time chief minister — had gone to Dubai on Saturday to attend a meeting convened by PPP co-chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari for primarily discussing and finalising a decision on expanding the scope of special policing powers of Rangers to the whole of Sindh.

Although there were reports of an imminent reshuffle in the Sindh cabinet, it appears that even Mr Shah was not aware of his fate when he landed in the United Arab Emirates. Sindh Senior Minister Murad Ali Shah — a top candidate for the post of chief minister — was already in Dubai when Mr Shah arrived there.

Senator Farhatullah Babar, spokesperson for Mr Zardari, said in a statement that the PPP had decided to make changes in the Sindh cabinet, including bringing in a new chief minister. According to Senator Babar, Mr Shah was also present in the Sunday meeting in Dubai which took the decision to remove him.

Explaining the decision, he said it had been taken after “some senior leaders of the party” called on the former president in Dubai.

Senator Babar said PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari “is scheduled to return to Karachi early in the week (starting from Monday) to meet provincial party leaders and MPAs before finalising changes in the Sindh cabinet”.

While the statement did not speak about any other issue that came under discussion during the meeting, also attended by Mr Bhutto-Zardari and Faryal Talpur, sources said Mr Zardari had earlier instructed Chief Minister Shah to extend the policing powers of Rangers only in Karachi division as soon as he reached the provincial capital.

However, Mr Zardari was still reluctant to give Mr Shah a go-ahead to expand the area of jurisdiction of the paramilitary force, as demanded by the military establishment, to the whole of Sindh.

The sources said the PPP co-chairman wanted certain assurances from the military establishment that Rangers would not arrest any elected member or bureaucrat and would inform the Sindh chief minister before taking any action in any part of Sindh other than Karachi.

He also wanted his party to refer the matter of Rangers’ stay in Sindh and their powers to the provincial assembly, the sources added.

After his return to the country, Mr Shah would tender his resignation to Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, who would summon a session of the Sindh Assembly for the election of the new leader of the house.

A senior PPP leader, requesting anonymity, told Dawn that because of old age Mr Shah “is not moving with the pace of time as he was supposed to”.

Besides, he said, Mr Shah was “too soft” on certain issues, which included the current controversy surrounding the Rangers’ special powers and their action against certain individuals belonging to the PPP.

The 83-year-old Shah, who was the provincial president of PPP from 2004 until earlier this year when Mr Bhutto-Zardari dissolved all provincial bodies, had survived attempts to replace him in the past. Mr Zardari shot down every proposal to remove him.

Murad Ali Shah, son of the late former chief minister Abdullah Shah, did not contest the May 2013 general election. He was elected unopposed in a by-election from Jamshoro (PS-73) in November 2014 after he renounced his Canadian nationality.

At that time too, he was tipped as the next chief minister after Mr Bhutto-Zardari threw his weight behind him.

Doomed EgyptAir flight broke up midair after fire: report

NEW YORK: An EgyptAir flight that crashed into the Mediterranean in May likely broke up in midair after a fire erupted in or near the cockpit, the New York Times reported Friday.

However it remains unclear whether the blaze was triggered by mechanical malfunction or a criminal act, Egyptian officials who spoke on condition of anonymity told the Times.

Last Saturday an Egyptian-led investigative committee reported that the word “fire” could be heard on EgyptAir flight 804's cockpit voice recorder before it crashed.

But the forensic and aviation officials in Cairo who spoke with the Times said that both the cockpit voice and flight data recorders, combined with the distribution and condition of recovered debris and human remains, had led them to their latest conclusion.

EgyptAir flight 804 was carrying 40 Egyptians, 15 French people, two Iraqis, two Canadians and one passenger each from Algeria, Belgium, Britain, Chad, Portugal, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.

The Airbus A320 was en route from Paris to Cairo when it disappeared from radar over the Mediterranean.

The crash followed the bombing of a Russian passenger plane over Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula last October, killing all 224 passengers and crew.

The militant Islamic State group claimed responsibility for that attack, but there has been no such claim linked to the EgyptAir crash.

Root, Woakes look to stretch England total as day two begins

MANCHESTER: England on Saturday began day two of the second Test against Pakistan on four for 314.

Joe Root and Chris Woakes, the unbeaten batsmen at stumps on day one, started the proceedings on 141 and 2, respectively.

Root, coming in at number three, put up a remarkable show on Friday with a magnificent 246-ball 141.

After Alastair Cook-led England faced an early blow in the form of Alex Hales' dismissal on the last ball of the seventh over, a 185-run stand between the English skipper and Root pushed the visitors onto the back foot.

During the partnership, Cook registered his fifth Test century against Pakistan. This was only the second time since 1962 that two from the top three English batsmen scored centuries in a Test innings.

Pakistan bowlers had a long day on a placid wicket that offered them no assistance.

The star of the Lord's Test, Yasir Shah, failed to bag a wicket in his 31 overs.

Mohammad Amir and Rahat Ali took two wickets apiece.

غیر ملکی خبر رساں ایجنسی کے مطابق جرمنی کے شہر میونخ میں اولمپک اسٹیڈیم کے قریب واقع شاپنگ سینٹر میں مسلح شخص نے فائرنگ کردی جس کے نتیجے میں 9  افراد ہلاک اور21 زخمی ہوگئے۔ خبر ایجنسی کے مطابق مسلح شخص کی فائرنگ سے شاپنگ سینٹر میں بھگدڑ مچ گئی جس سے کئی افراد ایک دوسرے پر گرنے سے بھی زخمی ہوئے جب کہ واقعہ کے بعد پولیس نے شاپنگ سینٹر کو گھیرے میں لے کر سرچ آپریشن شروع کردیا، فائرنگ کے واقعے کے فوری بعد شہر میں ٹرین اور میٹرو سروس بند کردی جب کہ شہر میں فوج کو طلب کرلیا گیا اور جرمن حکام کی جانب سے لوگوں کو گھروں میں رہنے کی ہدایات جاری کی گئیں۔

جرمن میڈیا کا عینی شاہدین کے حوالے سے کہنا تھا کہ حملہ آور نے پہلے با آواز بلند نعرہ لگایا کہ ’’میں جرمن ہوں اور غیر ملکیوں سے نفرت کرتا ہوں‘‘ اور پھر فائرنگ کردی، عوام پر فائرنگ کرنے کے بعد حملہ آور نے خود کو بھی گولی مار کر ہلاک کردیا۔

پولیس حکام کا کہنا ہے کہ حملہ آور کی شناخت 18 سالہ ایرانی نژاد جرمن شہری کے طور پر ہوئی ہے تاہم حملے کا مقصد واضح نہیں ہو سکا ہے، حملہ آور کا کسی شدت پسند گروپ سے کوئی تعلق بھی نہیں ملا جب کہ اس کا کوئی کرمنل ریکارڈ بھی موجود نہیں ہے۔ جرمن حکام کا کہنا ہے کہ علاقے کو کلیئر کر کے ٹریفک کو بحال کردیا گیا ہے۔
